PLA vs PETG for the Portuguese Climate

For most indoor décor in Portugal, PLA is fine — but anything that sees real heat, damp, or a sun-baked windowsill should be PETG, and anything outdoors should be ASA. What PLA and PETG actually are

Both are FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) thermoplastics printed layer by layer.

  • PLA (polylactic acid) is a plant-derived filament prized for crisp detail and easy, reliable printing. It's the default for decorative pieces. Its weakness is heat and moisture: it has a low glass-transition temperature (~55–60°C) and will slowly soak up humidity, becoming brittle over time.
  • PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) is a tougher, slightly glossier filament — the same family as drink-bottle plastic. It resists impact and flex, tolerates more heat (~70–80°C), and handles moisture much better, which makes it the practical choice for functional pieces.

Why the Aveiro climate makes this a real decision

Aveiro sits on the Atlantic coast — think salt air, high humidity, and mild-to-hot summers. Two things matter for a 3D print here:

  1. Heat. A south-facing windowsill or a parked car interior can climb well past 60°C in July and August. A PLA piece left there can slump or warp. PETG (or PLA-HT) holds up.
  2. Moisture. Persistent coastal humidity slowly works into PLA, which can make it more brittle over months. PETG's moisture resistance means functional pieces stay dependable.

None of this means PLA is a bad material — it's the best choice for a detailed statue on an interior shelf. It just means the placement decides the filament.

Where PLA-HT and ASA come in

PLA and PETG cover most needs, but two more materials handle the extremes:

  • PLA-HT (high-temperature PLA) keeps PLA's crisp detail but, once heat-treated, holds its shape to roughly 90–110°C. It's ideal for indoor pieces that sit somewhere genuinely warm — a sunny sill, a car cabin part — where standard PLA would fail.
  • ASA is UV- and weather-resistant (heat tolerance ~95–100°C) and is the material made for the outdoors. If a piece will live on a balcony, in a garden, or in constant sun, ASA is the right call.
