What Is a HueForge?

A HueForge is a 3D-printed picture that reproduces an image using nothing but stacked layers of coloured filament at carefully varied thicknesses — no paint, no ink. Light passes through and reflects off the thin layers, and because different filament colours are more or less translucent, controlling how thick each layer is at each point recreates a full image in relief. The result is a flat-ish panel of wall art that looks painted but is entirely 3D printed. How a HueForge works

Ordinary FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) printing builds an object from melted plastic, layer by layer. A HueForge uses the same process but exploits a property most prints ignore: filament is slightly translucent, and how much colour you see depends on how thick that colour's layer is and what sits beneath it.

The HueForge technique works by:

  1. Mapping an image to layers. Software translates the picture into a height map, deciding how thick each colour should be at every point to reproduce its tone.
  2. Swapping colours at set heights. During printing, the filament colour changes at specific layers, so light filtering through the stack blends into the target shades.
  3. Building shading through thickness. Thin sections let more of the underlying colour show; thicker sections block it. That gradient is what creates depth, highlights, and shadow.

The outcome is a panel — often best viewed with light behind or across it — where a full-colour image emerges from just a handful of filament colours.

A HueForge is an indoor décor piece. Keep it out of direct, prolonged sun and away from heat sources — like most PLA pieces, it's happiest on an interior wall or shelf, not a sun-baked window.
